  • The Curly Girl Tag

    The Curly Girl Tag

I have to say, I’m rather getting into this whole ‘video thing’. I’ve currently been trying to keep up with uploading one video per week to my YouTube channel, which is so far, so good (for the past 3 weeks at least) and hopefully this is set to continue.

I love blogging but I feel YouTube is a good extension to the content I post here and I like how with videos, a little more of your personality is able to be shown.

Anyway for this recent video I decided to do something a little different on my channel and do my first ever ‘tag’ video. It felt only right to start with the ‘Curly Girl Tag’ (for obvious reasons). As I often get asked questions about my hair, I thought it would be fun to answer these 10 questions in this tag…

    1. What inspired you to go natural or wear your hair curly?
    2. Who are your favourite curly hair idols?
    3. Which YouTube curly girl would you trade curls with for a day?
    4. If you could have only one product for a year, which product would you chose?
    5. If you could change one thing about your curls what would it be?
    6. What’s the craziest thing you’ve tried on your “natural hair journey”?
    7. What’s your secret ingredient that your curls LOVE the most?
    8. If you could merge two brands of products to make your perfect product, which two would it be?
    9. What is your go-to hair style when you’re in a rush?
    10. If your curly hair had a name, what would it be and why?

  • Do Men Treat You Differently When You Have Natural Hair?

Do Men Treat You Differently When You Have Natural Hair?

Recently I watched the YouTube video #MenOnNaturalHair : Do Men Treat You Differently When You Have Natural Hair? by Davina from The London Curls. She answered two questions in her video, ‘Do men treat you differently when you wear your hair natural?’ and ‘Would you ever change your hair for a man?’. I found it really interesting hearing about Davina’s experiences and it got me thinking about my own experiences with men and my natural afro hair. I hadn’t thought about these types of questions in a long time before watching Davina’s video and it made me realise how different each persons experience with their natural hair, relationship and the opposite sex can be. I felt eager to do a response to this and decided to answer Davina’s questions…

So, would I change my hair for a man? Watch my short video to find out.

  • Naturally Curly Hair – Wash and Go Routine

Naturally Curly Hair – Wash and Go Routine

I get asked quite a lot about my hair routine and more recently quite a few people have been asking me to do a video on how I style my hair. I previously posted a mini video of my wash and go on Instagram a while back but since some of you were asking, I though it was about time that I made a full length version for those of you with similar hair or others who may just be curious.

I’ve done a previous post detailing my wash and go here. Since then some of the products I use have changed, plus I have a different hair cut. In this video I use Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment and Macadamia Leave In Cream . Prior to drying I washed my hair with The Body Shop’s Rainforest Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, please like it. 🙂

  • Girls with Curls

    Girls with Curls

Yesterday I was in London. I was up bright and early (5am if you must know) as I had a shoot for Speedo in the morning. Then in the afternoon I made my way into central London to meet up with fellow blogger Fro Girl Ginny. It was mine and Ginny’s first time meeting and the pros of meeting up with a fellow curly girl is that I’m able to spot her fabulous curly mane from across the station. Straight off we began chatting away and it was nice to see that Ginny is just as lovely in person as she appeared over email.

Together Ginny and I headed to The Breakfast Club for a bite to eat and even though I wasn’t actually very hungry, as it was my first time eating there, I couldn’t help but opt for The All American. This is a dish that consists of sausage, eggs, fried potatoes, crispy bacon, pancakes and maple syrup. Considering I ‘wasn’t very hungry’ I soon managed to finish it all of course and it certainly pleased the tastebuds and set me up for the day.

The rest of the afternoon we spent wondering around London, popping in some shops and stopping for drinks to chat more. Obviously when two bloggers meet there is rarely a moment that the cameras are away and so we spent plenty of time getting ‘snap happy’ and capturing plenty of shameless double selfies too.

These are my first shots of my newly cut fro. As I mentioned in my previous post, my hair had some seriously damaged ends and so I had two inches cut off. I’m still slightly mourning the loss but my hair is feeling so much better for it and anyway, it will grow. Today I was rocking a braid out and embracing the frizz but it will be interesting to see how it looks after a wash and go when my curls are in their natural coils, as I can see I’m going to have some major shrinkage but we shall see.

After lots of fro snaps and a fun day with Ginny, it was eventually time for me to make my way to the station and head home back home to Manchester.

  • Boyfriend Jeans, Heels & A Tee

Boyfriend Jeans, Heels & A Tee

I really have been embracing my casual side as of late. Comfy denims and relaxed tees, are some of the pieces that I have been loving at the moment. Of course I am still very fond of my heels and so I do enjoy combining the casual with the dressy. I like how a sophisticated heel with a pair of slouchy jeans can add femininity to an otherwise tomboyish look. I also seem to have a new found ‘thing’ for logo/slogan tops, I’m maybe slightly late on the bandwagon with that one but I like how a slogan Tee can add a statement to your outfit without the need for over styling.

  • Dream Curls – John Frieda Frizz Ease

Dream Curls – John Frieda Frizz Ease

I’ve recently been using the John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Shampoo and John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Conditioner. I really like these products. For me they work really well on my curls. I don’t like to shampoo too often but for me I need to do a full wash at least a couple of times a week to prevent product build up. Also because I go to the gym quite often it’s something I find necessary for my hair as apposed to ‘no poo‘ techniques. The Dream Curls Shampoo does well to clean the hair and scalp without leaving my hair feeling too dry afterwards and the Dream Curls Conditioner works well to detangle my curls and make my hair softer and more manageable.

  • Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Serum

    Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Serum

Recently I had the chance to try out Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Serum. The reason I actually ended up trying this product is because I’d stayed over at my friend’s place the night before and hadn’t brought any hair products with me to style my hair the next day. My friend has straight hair so I thought I was going to have a bit of a dilemma when it came to maintaing my curls but after I used the Organix Serum, I was really pleased with the results.

Renewing Organix Moroccan Argan Penetrating Oil

I did a regular wash using shampoo and conditioner before applying this product. I generally leave a small amount of conditioner in my hair after washing (so I never fully rinse out the product). After having my hair wrapped in a towel for some time, I took it off my hair and applied the Organix Serum. Whilst my hair was still damp. I used a hair dryer to dry my hair and once my hair was fully dried I was very happy with the outcome. I didn’t use a huge amount of product and yet it still left my hair looking super glossy yet soft to the touch. It leaves the hair feeling non-sticky which is great and also makes it ideal for use on straight hair too.

  • Jirano – Hair Care

    Jirano – Hair Care

    Curls afro hair care

Jane and Jedi, the founders behind HairCare brand Jirano were kind enough to send me a couple of their hair products to try out. The two products I recieved were Jirano’s Hair Masque and Intensive Hair Repair. The products are aimed at curly to Afro hair but claim to ‘moisturize, and tame, dry and frizzy hair’, so can be used on a number of hair types and textures.

The packaging of the products is simple yet smart and the tubs are made of a strong plastic with a metal lid. The hair products are paraben free as well as being free of synthetic oils and synthetic fragrances.

The first product I tried out was the Hair Masque – coconut and avocado infused. The hair masque is of a thick paste like consistency. The instructions on the tub instruct as follows ‘after washing apply to your hair. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse.’

    Jirano Hair Masque

I must admit I was slightly sceptical straight after first applying this product as it was thick and didn’t feel like it would soak easily into my hair. I followed the instructions and applied the products trying to spread it as evenly around my hair as possible. I didn’t use a huge amount of the product, I’d say around a small scoop full in my fingers. After applying I wrapped my hair up and left the masque on for 20 minutes as recommended.

When rinsing out the Hair Masque it felt as though some of the product was left on the hair. I was unsure whether to wash it out but I decided to just go with the instructions and rinse it out as much as possible. I applied a small amount of one of my regular leave in conditioners (and I mean a very small amount) and then dried my hair.

When drying my hair, my curls kept their natural coil (which is sometimes lost to frizz when using not much product) and the shine that my hair was left with was amazing. I was super impressed with this product and I loved it.

    Samio curls blog 2

My hair was left looking and feeling great. I would say for my texture of hair and looser curl patterns, less of this product should be used as it is quite thick so not a lot is needed. I would imagine this product would also work wonders on super dry/frizzy hair and on more coarser Afro hair types. It is an ideal hair masque to use in these winter months when dry hair needs this moisture most.

    Samio curls blog

The second product I tried was Intensive Hair Repair. It says ‘hydrate & mend dry hair – infused with coconut oil’. This product is of a runnier consistency, like that of a conditioner. The instructions on the tub say to ‘dampen hair & apply liberally. Wrap hair in shower cap for 30 minutes and rinse.’ I don’t have a shower cap so I just wrapped my hair in a towel.
Although it didn’t instruct to do so, I applied this product straight after washing, as my hair needed a wash.

When I came to rinse out the Intensive Hair Repair my hair was easy to comb through as it had soaked into the curls leaving them easier to manage.

I let my hair air dry until still slightly damp and then applied a small amount of my usual product, Macadamia Oil. Again I used way less Macadamia Oil than I usually would as I wanted to see best as I could the results from the Intensive Hair Repair. This time, instead of a wash and go I sectioned my hair into five braids ready to do a braid out the next day.

When I took the braids out the next morning, I had intended to add more of my usual products to revitalise my curls but as I unravelled the plaits, my curls were bouncing back.

    Samio curls blog 3

I was really pleasantly surprised with how good the Intensive Hair Repair had left my curls feeling. My hair felt so soft and was almost product free. Usually when I have this little product in my hair, it is so much more frizzier. There was some natural frizz to my hair but I quite liked it as it just gave my hair it’s natural look but still holding much of the coils.

I’m really pleased with the results after using these two Jirano products and I would definitely recommend them to anyone with dry or frizzy hair as they work wonders at rejuvenating curls and minimising frizz.

  • Macadamia Natural Oil – My Curls Before & After

Macadamia Natural Oil – My Curls Before & After

As you may know I love Macadamia hair products, so I was more than happy when I opened not one but five Macadamia hair kits, as presents off my Grandparents this Christmas.

My hair was over due a good treatment after all the styling over the holidays and I’d just ran out of my last Macadamia hair product, so this gift came at the perfect time.

In this post I’m going to show you my hair results after using the Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo (I forgot to get an individual shot of that bottle to add in further down this post), Macadamia Deep Repair Masque, Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment and Macadamia Leave In Cream, along with using their No Tangle brush.

This Macadamia No Tangle brush set is great for first time users as it comes with a mini 10ml bottle of the Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment and a 15ml sachet of the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque. This is perfect for those who want to try the products before you buy the full sized bottles. Also I absolutely love this brush. I’m always adamant on using my Afro comb so I was surprised to see how well this brush worked on my curls.
    Macadamia No Tangle Comb review
I always brush my curls when wet, starting at the ends of my hair brushing down and in sections working my way up the hair, as to slowly detangle. I first used the No Tangle brush after I’d left the Deep Repair Masque on my hair. Before I was ready to wash the masque out, I combed through my hair with the No Tangle brush and the small flexible bristles worked through my curls really well.

This is my hair when I have just woken up. As you can see it is frizzy and the curls look less defined. (Also I was due a hair cut at the time when I took these pictures, so my hair needed particular TLC on the ends and was looking a bit dull.)

    DSC_0010

Firstly I wash my hair with the Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo, as the same with most shampoos, I apply to my hair when wet, massaging into the scalp through to the ends before rinsing.

I then use the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque. Applying when my hair is still wet I leave it on for five minutes. Before rinsing I comb through my hair with the No Tangle brush.

After fully rinsing my hair I then wrap my hair in a towel.

Whilst my hair is still damp, with my fingers I go through my hair with the Macadamia Leave In Cream. Once the product is evenly distributed through my hair, I then apply a small amount of the Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment to my ends and then work it through my hair.

After letting my hair dry my curls are left looking and feeling healthier, not to mention smelling great! My natural coils are restored and my hair has a nice sheen to it without feeling oily or greasy. Macadamia Natural Oil hair products can be used on all hair types and they are definitely a favourite brand to use in mine.
