Shooting In An Ugly Space & The Golden Hour

Self Portrait Natural Lighting Indoor Shoot

Making The Most Out Of A Space

I remember before Damien and I moved into our house, I used to get frustrated with the space I had to work in. When it came to shooting content for my blog, I would often have ideas in mind of the images I wanted to create and that didn’t quite seem to fit with my surroundings. Obviously doing street style shots has always been an option and something that I still love to do today, but when the weather doesn’t permit (which can be more often than not here in England), shooting indoors becomes the only option.

In my last blog post I talked about how I’ve been getting back into shooting self portraits, in order to improve my photography and editing skills and it’s something that I have been well and truly getting stuck into. I’ve been shooting almost daily in fact, when I can fit in the time and it’s true what they say, that practice makes perfect. I’m seeing my skills improving with each shoot and edit.

The problem with constantly using my space to shoot in however, is the fact that I’m running out of it. The idea of this ‘accidental project’, let’s call it, is that I want to push myself creatively and improve my skills when it comes to shooting and editing images for my blog and so I don’t want to repeat the same type of image over and over.

Whilst our living room and kitchen space have been come together quite nicely, as we near the end of our house renovation, the rest of our house is still somewhat more of a work in progress. That being said, it actually occurred to me that it’s still possible to make the most out of any space. With this also being about me getting creating, working with the unfinished, or ‘ugly spaces’, pushes me to do just that.

I guess it’s easy to capture pretty or aesthetically pleasing shots, when the location does most of the hard work for you but when working in a space that is a down right shambles (like my current hallway situation for example), it forces you to get a bit more creative.

I really managed to utilise the golden hour for these shots and as the sun shone through into my hallway, the lighting was just beautiful. As I’m someone who is still very much practicing here, I’m not a pro when it comes to lighting and how best to capture it, but I know that as a simple rule, natural lighting is great and during the golden hour (just before the sun sets). It’s a prime time for that gorgeous golden lighting.

Tripod to the ready and I quickly set myself up ready to capture my shots in the brief window I had before the perfect sunlight finally set. Whilst capturing my outfit and working with the stairs, I also had to capture a few close up beauty shots because the lighting was just too juicy not to take advantage of. The way the lighting and shadows fell, it really framed the shots nicely and considering this is an ugly space, I’m really happy with how these shots turned out.

As for my outfit, because it would be rude not to talk a bit about it whilst I’m here (this is primarily a style blog after all), I’ve pretty much been living in the same old favourites recently. I guess that’s why they call them staple pieces, because they are the items in your wardrobe that bring all the pieces together and that you wear the most. Well this is an entire outfit of staple pieces right here. The roll neck I purchased last winter from Tesco. I was doing a food shop when I spotted it and it’s been a go to item in my winter wardrobe ever since. The jeans need no introduction because they are a pair of my most loved and most worn (frequently featured here on the blog), from & Other Stories…and Converse, well they need no explanation really do they.

Oh and if you’re interested, this is a hair and makeup look I’ve been wearing a lot recently (mainly to protect my hair during the Winter months) and I’ve just done a get ready with me video on it, which you can watch here. Anyway, that’s all for today. Ciao for now!

  • My Look Fantastic Black Friday Must Haves & Gift Guide

My Look Fantastic Black Friday Must Haves & Gift Guide

You’re probably sick of hearing about Black Friday already and if I’m honest, I couldn’t think of anything worse than heading to the high street and getting caught up in the manic bustle that is Black Friday…However I have come to realise that this can actually be the perfect time to pick up a few of those Christmas gifts that you may be after and on the beauty side of things, there are lots of great offers to be had. That being said, regardless of the occasion, you know I like any shopping I do to be well thought out and so I have put together a little bit of Christmas gift guide, featuring a round up of 5 Lookfantastic Black Friday offers, that could make great gifts for some of the special ladies in your life this Christmas…

    For Mum

Eve Lom has got to be one of my top luxury skincare brands. I’ve already gushed over their cleanser here on my blog in the past and now I’m excited to introduce these new masks into my routine. I say ‘into my routine’, more like ‘into my special occasion skincare routine’, because I must admit these are on the higher end of the price spectrum. However, if you’re someone/or know someone who loves to indulge in luxury skincare, then this could be just the perfect time to nab the Eve Lom White Brightening Mask on a Black Friday offer. I used my first one in preparation for a shoot the night before, and aide from finding the look of the sheet mask hilarious on first application (just google it if you don’t know what I mean), I actually loved how soft, supple and fresh it left my skin. I see this one being a great gift for the Mother or any special lady in your life who deserves an extra special pamper.

    For Sis

You should already know/have guessed by now that I love skincare products and anything that can aid with helping/maintaining good skin, I’m all for. So it’s no surprise that I’m super excited about this little gadget, the Foreo Luna Mini. It works as a great bacteria free way to cleanse the skin, whilst the tiny pulsating rubber touch points help to remove dirt and oil and keep pores clean. There are no batteries required as it comes with a wire to charge it up and it has a long life span due to the fact that it’s all rubber and it requires no replacements bristles or anything like that. If you have a sister who is into her skincare, or maybe just needs a convenient way to simplify her routine, then this could be a great one for her!

    For the Bestie

Two brands that I love for makeup brushes and tools are Real Techniques and Look Good Feel Better. I think two of my most used makeup tools are probably a beauty sponge and a contour brush. I’ve used a LGFB Sculpting Sponge for quite some time and it’s so convenient because not only does the sponge itself help effortlessly blend foundation onto the skin, leaving it looking even and natural, but the shape is also great for using on different parts of the face. And this sponge isn’t a one trick pony because once my foundation is applied, I like to use the curved tip for applying concealer under my eyes and then the pointed end for applying liquid highlighter. It’s also super easy to clean and once it’s dry it simply bounces back to it’s usual shape…And then there’s the contour brush and this isn’t just any contour brush, because just look how beautiful it is! Not only the perfect gift because Real Techniques are actually renowned for their great quality brushes (I’ve owned several) but also because this may be the prettiest brush I’ve seen…and who doesn’t like practical and pretty!

    For You

Let’s face it, after shopping for all the main ladies in your life, it would be rude to not treat yourself to a little something too!…Illamasqua has long been one of my favourite makeup brands. There’s not a single night out when at least one Illamasqua product doesn’t make it onto my face. They know how to do strong pigments and fierce colours…speaking of fierce colours, can we please take a moment of appreciation for the gorgeous red shade in this eyeshadow palette! I’ve actually been on the look out for a shade like this for some time and I should have known that Illamasqua would be the brand to do it. These eyeshadows are perfect for creating smokey eye looks and whether it’s for a friend, or just for yourself, it’s certainly a perfect party palette.

  • Getting The Glow With Pixi Beauty

Getting The Glow With Pixi Beauty

It’s generally around this time of the year when I like to take extra steps to give my skin some added glow. Pixi beauty do a whole range of glow enhancing products and as a brand I’d heard a lot about yet never previously got round to trying, when I was given the opportunity to pick out a selection of their products, I couldn’t wait to put them to the test…

    Pixi Nourishing Cleansing Balm

I was egar to try this Nourishing Cleansing Balm as I genrally like these types of products. This cleansing balm contains sweet almond oil, cocoa butter and shea butter (and like all the other products, is not tested on animals). It can be used both morning and night and I have found that it works great to melt away makeup. I actually really like using this cleansing balm both morning and night, as after wiping it off with a damp cloth, it leaves my skin feeling nourished and hydrated. It works as a great skin pick me up both first thing in the morning and in the evening after a long busy day.

Pixi Beauty Nourishing Cleansing Balm Review

    Pixi Glow Mud Mask

I do love a good face mask and this one is no exception. As opposed to some mud masks which leave my skin feeling slightly dry afterwards, this one actually leaves my skin feeling hydrated. It also leaves my skin feeling and looking very fresh after using it. I only with that there was more in the tube… I can’t wait to give myself my next 15 minute facial with this one.

Pixi Glow Mud Mask face mask review

    Pixi Glow Peel Pads

These Glow Peel Pads might just be my favourite out of this selection of Skintreats. The tub contains 60 pads which I think is great and I love how handy they are to use and take about if you were to be going away. They are perfect to use at night after cleansing and they have actually been leaving my skin looking brighter and more radiant, just as they claim. These aren’t a product I use every night, due to them being exfoliating and I don’t like to exfoliate my skin everyday. However, using these just a few times a week is enough to do the job and leave my skin looking glowing.

Pixi Skintreats Glow Peel Pads Review

    Pixi Hydrating Milky Serum

This stuff really does feel hydrating and milky on the skin. I’ll use it either morning or night and it instantly hydrates and soothes my skin. In the evening it’s the perfect follow on product to use after the Glow Peel Pads and after the serum has sunk into my skin it, leaves it feeling so soft and smooth.

    Pixi Hydrating Milky Serum Review

    Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser

This cleanser, unlike the cleansing balm, is slightly more exfoliating on the skin, although it still feels smooth when you rub it on. The 5% gycolic acid that it contains, helps to remove dead skin cells and give the skin instant radiance I find. It has a super fresh feeling on my skin which I love and it really does leave my skin feeling refreshed and looking brighter.

Pixi Skintreats Glow Mud Cleanser Review

    Pixi Glowtion Day Dew

I love the fact that this Glowtion Day Dew contains a slight shimmer which leaves my skin looking glowing. It helps to nourish my skin and leaves it looking luminous at the same time. I personally like to wear this on no makeup days when I want that added glow yet stay makeup free.

    Pixi Glowtion Day Dew Review

    Pixi Glow Mist

I’ve wanted a product like this for quite some time and I’m happy to say that this Glow Mist lives up to my expectations. It helps to prep the skin before makeup and a few spits to the face anytime throughout the day, helps to give my skin an added glow that leaves my makeup looking and feeling refreshed. This is a new handbag favourite for me!

Pixi by Petra Glow Mist Review

I’ve actually been loving the affects that the Pixi Beauty skincare products have been having on my skin. Glowing skin restored and I’m happy to say that I can give this brand a thumbs up for their skincare… I also got to try a few of the products from Pixi beauty’s makeup selection. I love how Pixi Beauty is all about restoring healthier skin and using makeup to compliment great skin without harming it.

Pixi Beauty Blush, Eye Liner, Mascara and Lipstick Review

    The Pixi Beauty Makeup Products:
Book ff Beauty – Touch of Blush
Lash Booster Mascara – Blackest Black
Lash Line Ink – Silky Black
    Lipstick in Peach Blossom

I like using these products for creating a fresh daytime makeup look. The shades in the blush palette are perfect for added a youthful pop of colour to the cheeks and I feel that the coral and pinkish shades really help to enhance the skins glow. Just a little bit of blush to my cheeks makes a nice change to my usual subtle contour technique. I’ve fallen in love with these coral tones…

The mascara glides on like a dream and really helps to enhance my natural lashes and the liner has a super pointy tip, which makes it easy to use and ideal for creating a subtle day time winged liner. We can’t forget the lipstick which feels nourishing on the lips, not to mention how gorgeous the colour is. I don’t usually go for coral lipstick, what do you think?

  • LookFantastic November Beauty Box Review

    LookFantastic November Beauty Box Review

This month’s Lookfantastic beauty box includes another great selection of products and here’s a full review of what is inside…

    Lookfantastic November Beauty Box Review

    Bellapierre Cosmetics Mineral Lipstick
I have to admit, I am yet to use this lipstick but that’s only due to the fact that I currently have several red lipsticks on the go. However I have been tempted to give this one a go as it smells delicious (I’m always drawn in by sweet scented lipsticks), and the Ruby shade in bright red look gorgeous.

    Bellapierre Cosmetics Mineral Lipstick

    Korres Guava Showergel
For the full size bottle (250ml) at £8, this showergel is quite a bit pricier than what I would usually spend. It’s funny though because I easily spend large amounts on what I put on my face but never really consider it when it comes to the rest of my body… First off this stuff smells amazing. The Guava scent of the showergel has a really unique tropical smell, which I love. And why is it the price it is? Well, it claims to help maintain the skin’s moisture whilst protecting it, along with helping to reduce the visible signs of ageing. Maybe I should start investing more on my body lotions and potions after all.

    Korres Guava Showergel review

    Ole Henriksen’s Empower Cleanser
I’ve only used this a couple of times (my cleanser collection appears to be building up rabidly). The couple of times I have used it though, it has left my skin feeling lovely and soft. It also contains salicylic acid which is great for helping to shed dead skin cells.

    Ole Henriksen’s Empower Cleanser Review

    Dr. PAWPAW Ultimate Red Balm
Makeup artists often have this to hand on shoots and it’s something I’ve said I’m going to buy for ages. Now I finally have my own PAWPAW in this convenient miniature size, which currently lives in my handbag. This PAWPAW Red Balm, unlike the original, is slightly tinted. It is a very subtle tint however and just adds the slightest hint of colour when applied to the lips. It can also be used on your cheeks and can be used as a skin protector or for irritable, dry skin. For me personally this has currently been my lip saviour.

Dr. PAWPAW Ultimate Red Balm Review

REN V-Cense Youth Vitality Day Cream
I really like this day cream. It really helps hydrate and add moisture to my skin without leaving me looking shiny. It smooths on easily and it leaves my skin looking matte. It has a sort of herbal scent, which reminds me of herbal tea but I rather like it. I’m enjoying the results of this day cream as it leaves my skin feeling plump and hydrated.

REN V-Cense Youth Vitality Day Cream Review

    Kebelo Enriching Masque
I’ve used this hair masque once and I have to say, it’s not for me. It is designed for naturally dry hair, which is certainly my hair, however It’s probably not intended for my hair texture and that’s apparent with the fact that it did not do much. It’s probably much more suitable for European hair I would imagine.

    Kebelo Enriching Masque Review

November’s Lookfantastic Beauty Box has been another hit with me and there’s only been one product that I have felt is not something for me, which was of course the hair masque. I fell I get slightly repetitive in my round up of these Beauty Boxes, but I am genuinely impressed with the selection of products that I find in them each month. It may be the fact that each box I’ve received so far has had a great selection of skincare and I am a self confessed skincare addict after all.

  • Rediscovering L’Oreal Lipsticks

    Rediscovering L’Oreal Lipsticks

It had been a good while since I last purchased a lipstick from L’Oreal, maybe years even. On a recent mini makeup haul I found myself browsing the L’Oreal counter and was lured in by the intriguing array of lip shades. Without getting too carried away, I decided to purchase two lipsticks and a gloss…

L’Oreal Color Riche Lipstick Erotique 640

I am in love with this subtle pink shade. Its creamy consistency looks matte but keeps its moisture. It’s a great everyday shade and it’s currently been one of my favourite go to lipsticks.

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Collection Lipstick Pure Blake

Blake’s red is a classic Hollywood red. It’s long lasting and doesn’t dry out the lips. It’s one of those lipsticks that makes you feel super glam as soon as you apply it.

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Gloss Gloss me Gorgeous DAZZLE 202

When I want my lips to have a super glossy look, this is the perfect lipgloss to go for. It’s not overly sticky yet has an incredible shine that really does make your lips dazzle. I love this one for nights out and it looks gorgeous with a dramatic eye look.

    L'Oreal Paris Infallible Gloss Review

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Gloss Flash Dance DAZZLE 208 review

Loreal Paris Infallible Gloss Flash Dance DAZZLE

I am currently loving my recent purchases and I’m surprised I hadn’t previously ventured back to L’Oreal earlier. One reason may be that I can often be quite fussy about lipstick scents and I find that the L’Oreal ones have an old fashioned makeup smell, which reminds me of the smell of Palm of Violet sweets – great if you really like Palm of Violets. Something I do particularly like about these lipsticks is the packaging and I especially love the look of the gold one. The formulas are good and one thing consistent of all three of these products is that they don’t dry out the lips and they feel comfortable to wear.

I really like the variety of classic shades from the L’Oreal lipstick collections. I feel that they are lip shades that you can always go back to and I’m sure I’ll be repurchasing these particular ones again in the future.

Have you tried any of the L’Oreal lipsticks recently?

    LookFantastic October Beauty Box Review

It’s the end of October already but better late than never I guess. So here is a review of this month’s LookFantastic Beauty Box.

    Lookfantastic Beauty Box Review

    Balance Me Radiance Face Mask

I’ve used this face mask before and you can read my full review of it here. As it is a product that I’ve previously used and liked, I was quite happy to find it in this month’s box.

Balance Me Radiance Face Mask Review

Percy & Reed Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational Volumizing No Oil Oil

As someone with ‘big hair’, who uses copious amount of ‘actual oil’ to add moisture,  this isn’t exactly a product targeted at me. I will be quite honest in saying that I haven’t tried this product, nor do I intend to (for obvious reasons) but I’m sure I’ll be able to give it to a friend who will find it useful.

Look Good Feel Better Eye Shading Brush

I currently use a few of the Look Good Feel Better makeup tools and so I was happy when I saw this eye shading brush in this month’s box. Like the other LGFB brushes, it’s super soft and it works perfectly for applying and blending eyeshadow.

Look Good Feel Better Eye Shading Brush Review

    Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser

I’m always happy to find new skincare in a beauty box. I’ve not tried any Murad products before and although I’m still yet to try this exfoliating cleaner (due to the fact that I currently have a few on the go), I’m sure it will come in handy for when I’m next travelling and need to take a miniature.

    Murad AHABHA Exfoliating Cleanser

    Monu Firming Moisturiser

I had never previously heard of Monu skincare but I must say that I am pleased with this moisturiser. It does what it says and helps to firm the skin and you can feel it working instantly. It’s not greasy and it sits well under makeup, which I particularly like.

    Monu Firming Moisturiser Review

    Elemis Hydra-Balance Day Cream

I really like this day cream. It’s been ideal for my skin whilst being on holiday, as after coming in from the sun it was nice to refresh and apply this day cream to restore moisture and hydration to my skin. It really does help to hydrate the skin and you can instantly feel it soak in. – I’d probably buy this product in full size in the future!

Elmis Hydra Balance Day Cream Review
Nuxe Paris Hand and Nail Cream

I’m surprised I haven’t finished this hand cream already. I’ve been carrying this around in my handbag on a daily basis and using it on the go. It doesn’t feel too oily and keeps my hands moisturised for a good amount of time. This miniature size has actually really come in handy when my handbag has been stuffed to the brim.

Nuxe Paris Reve De Miel Hand and Nail Cream review

Overall that’s another LookFantastic Beauty Box that I’ve been pleased with. I’ve received a good selection of products, some of which have really come in handy and others which I would purchase in the future.

  • No7 Beautiful Skin Overnight Revitalising Eye Balm

No7 Beautiful Skin Overnight Revitalising Eye Balm

Very early mornings and late finishes, whilst striving to look fresh faced and bright eyed is one of the challenges faced when modelling. It doesn’t sound like the most arduous task but believe me, when you’ve been up since 4am, hauled ass across the country to your shoot’s location and then have to look wide eyed and most importantly, alive, in front of the camera, it can often be a losing battle. Obviously makeup artists do an amazing job of covering dark circles and adding highlighter to give that ‘bright eyed’ look but on the other hand no amount of makeup can hide the dreaded puffy eye.

For me, my weapon of choice is No7’s Beautiful Skin Overnight Revitalising Eye Balm. As I sleep with my face buried into the pillow, I often wake up with puffy eyes and so I’m glad to have found a wonder balm that actually gets rid of my puffiness and as a bonus, reduces dark circles too.

The No7 revitalising eye balm, is meant as an overnight eye cream, however I like to use it in the mornings after washing my face too. I find this eye cream works well, both mornings and nights to help maintain a more fresh eyed look.

I think at £12.00, this product is good value for money. If you’re into your skincare then you’re probably used to spending more on products similar to this anyway and this product does the job at a fraction of the price of some other more well known brands. The product size is 15ml, which doesn’t sound like a lot but as a product I use daily and buy repeatedly, I can say that it lasts ages as you only need to use less than a pea sized amount each time you apply it.

I give this product a big thumbs up as it works well for me, so I would definitely recommend it.

  • Braid Out – Retro Up Do

Braid Out – Retro Up Do

So you’re waiting for the fro to grow and you’re fed up with the same style, or maybe you’re happy with the length but just fancy trying out a new do… Well here is an easy to follow step by step tutorial of a simple yet fancy looking, braid out style. This style can be done on long or short hair and is perfect for those of you who like the vintage look. Continue below to follow my 12 simple steps to achieve this style

    What you will need:
Leave in conditioner (or braid out product of your choice)
    Curvy grips/bobby pins
    Fabric or headscarf

    Step 1:

The night before, separate the hair into about four sections, add product to each section (I used Aussie Conditioner) and then plait… Basically you’ll be doing a braid out, if you need instructions on how best to do a braid out, read this previous, how to post here. Please note: Make sure one of your parts is to the side of your head and not in the center. This will just help the hair to fall to one side better when you take out the plaits, so then the style will be easier to achieve.

    Samio Hair Tutorial 1

    Step 2:

The next day, following on with the braid out process, undo the plaits carefully so not to mess up the newly formed wave in the hair.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 2

    Step 3:

Continue to undo all the plaits until you’re left with a head of waves. Separate parts of the hair slightly if you feel you need to. Do this gently using your fingers so not to create too much frizz.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 3

    Step 4:

Grab the majority of the hair, leaving about a quarter section to hang lose at the front…
    Samio Hair Tutorial 4

    Step 5:

Pin the grabbed hair at the back of the head. Do this using bobby pins/curvy grips (as many as needed) to secure in place.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 5

    Step 6:

Once the back part of the hair is pinned up and secured, you should be left with something that looks like this.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 6

    Step 7:

Now grab the front section of hair and take it to the side and again pin in place. One hair grip should be enough to hold this section but use more if needed.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 7

    Step 8:

Check that the front piece of hair is secure and that all grips are hidden.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 8

    Step 9:

Now that your style is in place, it’s time for the finishing touch… Grab a headscarf of your choice. Here I have chosen to use a long strip of organza fabric. You can buy this fabric at most haberdasheries or even online for a reasonable price. Don’t worry if you don’t have any organza fabric, a head scarf or any remnant of your choice of fabric will do fine. Just make sure that the fabric/headcarf you use is long enough to wrap around your head and tie into a large bow.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 9

    Step 10:

Wrap the fabric around the back of the head. Bring the fabric/headscarf together at the top of your head, just behind the front piece of pinned hair, then cross over and tie.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 10

    Step 11:

Finish tying the bow (the same as you would with a shoe lace) at the top of your head and then adjust the bow so that you are happy with it. If needed, secure the fabric/headscarf with more pins.
    Samio Hair Tutorial 11

    Step 12:

For the end result you should be left with something similar to this. Now go out, rock your new style and feel fabulous!
    Samio Hair Tutorial 12

Did you try out this style? I would love to know how it worked for you… Feel free to share your results with me via Instagram & Twitter – @samiorenelda
