    A September City Break

When I look back through my photos from Copenhagen, it’s just a reminder of how beautiful a city it actually is. From all I’d heard about Copenhagen prior to going, I’d guessed I was bound to fall in love with the city but I hadn’t expected it to be quite so colourful and vibrant as it is. Somehow the postcard perfect images of Nyhavn had previously escaped me and so to find streets lined with miss-matched brightly painted buildings was quite the pleasant surprise. Copenhagen has definitely been one of my favourite trips of the year so far and so here’s a break down of my trip and a few things that may help if you plan on heading to Copenhagen too.

    Where We Stayed

I took the trip to Copenhagen with my Mother at the start of September and we couldn’t have picked a better place to take our first trip abroad together in over six years. Whilst I have become quite well acquainted with Airbnb, it was my Mother’s first time staying in an Airbnb accommodation. I’m happy to say we picked an excellent place in the cool Meatpacking District of Vesterbro, where there were plenty of bars and restaurants on our doorstep and it was only a short walk from the city centre.

    Things To Do

There is so much to see and do in Copenhagen, just wandering the streets and stopping in a coffee shop can be satisfying enough, as there are so many nice coffee shops and restaurants. We did however still managed to fit in quite a great deal of ‘touristy’ stuff too.

On the Friday we headed to Tivoli gardens, which is an old amusement park, which has been there since the late 1800’s and it’s the second oldest operating amusement park in the world (pretty cool huh)! We’d heard that on a Friday evening that they have concerts and there’s a good atmosphere making it a good time to go, although it does make the entrance to the park on Friday evenings slightly more. We decided to skip the rides and just pay the entrance fee and have a wander around. At first I was a little skeptical as to how worth it the visit would be but I’m glad to say that it turned out to be totally worth it and I’m glad we went on the Friday evening too. It’s such a picturesque place and at night it is so unbelievably pretty, it’s also conveniently slap bang in the middle of the city, so it’s really easy to get to as well.

Another favourite spot was the Botanical Garden. I’d had this place on my list of places to visit long before we’d set off on our trip and I loved the place just as much as I’d imagined. I’ve been to botanical gardens before but none quite like this one and I loved walking around and taking pictures. It’s free too which is an added bonus.

We only did one museum but I think we picked one of the best ones to visit as we went to the National Museum of Denmark, which is huge. There is so much to see in there and although we spent a good few hours in the museum I still don’t think we even saw all of it. It was ideal for one of the rainy days on our trip when we didn’t fancy wandering about outside too much.

    Food

Before going to Copenhagen I’d been told by numerous people that the food there is really good. I’d reached out on Instagram and quite a few of you lovely lot gave me some suggestions of places to eat and by far one of my favourites that we tried from the bunch was Copenhagen Street Food on Papirøen, otherwise known as Paper Island. It’s an area filled with food trucked dedicated to street food from around the world and it’s also one of the more affordable places to eat too. We loved this place so much that we went twice and if you love food, it’s honestly hard to not walk around this place and find your eyes starting to feel bigger than your belly (hence us having to go back a second time to sample more dishes). There is something for everyone they have plenty of veggie and vegan option too. I had some of the best sushi I’ve ever had at this place and just thinking about it now makes me drool. There is seating both indoor and out and on the first occasion we went, outside was filled with deckchairs as people chilled out and basked in the sun. The second time it poured it down but luckily there is lots of indoor seating too.

    Weather

Speaking of weather, the weather in Copenhagen isn’t too dissimilar to that here in Manchester – raining one minute, sunny the next. We felt right at home. I have to say on arrival we were quite worried that we’d picked the worst days for our trip as it did seem to rain non stop for a good 24 hours. Thankfully we had a five night trip in total, so could spare a couple to rain and then by the Saturday the sun was shining and at points we actually got some pretty glorious weather, so it didn’t turn out all bad after all!

    Recommendations:
-For great views of the city centre go up Rundetaarn.
-Visit Tivoli Gardens at night and see how magical it is.
-Check out Freetown Christiania, it’s interesting to see but it’s best to go during the day.
-Definitely check out Nyhavn for postcard perfect views.
-Visit the National Museum of Denmark on a rainy day, or even on any day if you like museums.
-Check out the cool bars in vesterbro for nightlife. Friday’s are pretty bustling.
    -Go to the Botanical Garden.
Would I go again: Yes most definitely.

  • How To Be The Best Version Of Yourself

How To Be The Best Version Of Yourself

We all go through phases where we feel like we aren’t performing or feeling our best and it’s natural to go through these periods, because let’s face it, we can’t be on our A game all of the time. I for one regularly go through these periods but then I have to take a moment to remind myself of a few important things to keep myself in check and work towards getting myself back on track to being the best version of myself I can be. So here are a few pointers on how you too can do just that…

Don’t Worry About What Anyone Else Is Doing

It’s easy to look at what someone else is doing and take it as an example of what you should be doing in your own life but the truth is, we all have different strengths and abilities so what works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa. As they say, comparison is the thief of joy and aside from that, it’s also a massive time waster. So next time you find yourself looking to someone else for an example of what you think you should be doing/achieving in life, just remember that, that time could be better spent working on your own goals instead.

Give Yourself Time Off When It’s Needed

Whilst it may feel like you’re unable to stop when you have a gazillion things on your plate, it’s so important to schedule time out when it’s needed. If you’re overworked and tired you’re not going to be able to perform your best or be your best you, so it’s better to take time out and then come back and complete those tasks when you’re feeling back on your A game. It could be as little as taking time out for a bubble bath and switching off from the outside world for an hour or two, to taking a week out and getting away from it all completely. However you do it, just make sure you allow yourself that time and schedule it in when and for however long may be appropriate. Everyone needs a break occasionally and don’t feel bad for doing so. Give yourself those well deserved breaks and then you can come back feeling refreshed and back at your best again.

    Do What Makes You Happy

If you’re lucky enough to do a job that you love, then great, but if not then make sure that the time spent outside of work is used to do things that truly makes you happy. Now I know that even outside of work, life admin can often get in the way but it’s so important that you still make time for those things that you love; Be it spending time with family, hanging out with friends, working on a project or making time for your hobby. Sometimes we can let the time slip by until we realise that there is no time left at all and so making time for the things that bring us happiness is mandatory.

So that’s it and those are a few tips for how to be the best version of yourself. Obviously it’s important to take care of yourself and make sure you’re getting fed and watered properly but I thought I’d save you the excercise/healthy eating spiel in this post. Anyway, those are a few of my tips, what are some of yours? I’d love to know in the comments below. Until next time, ciao for now!

    Something New & Blue

It’s not often that I have any super new in pieces to share, in part because I often like to mull things over before finally taking the plunge and deciding to make the purchase and in part because, well, I don’t shop that often. I say this but then I have been a little bit spendy as of late, but that’s one I’ll leave for another blog post. Anywaaaay, back to today’s subject which is this new in Topshop blazer and when I say new in, I mean I purchased it the day it became available online, which was Monday and it’s now Wednesday.

This blazer was part of the Topshop London Fashion Week collection, which I hadn’t even realised when I’d purchased it because aside from it being a bit pricey for a Topshop blazer (£95), I had no clue and just thought it was a marvellous little jacket, which was just what I’d been after. And it seems that this one has been pretty popular too because I’ve noticed that it’s already completely sold out online. So it’s a bit annoying that the one time I have something really new to share with you, it’s out of stock because it’s been too darn popular.

Now, side story: So I wore the blazer for the first time today when I headed to a wonderful breakfast event with Carven (thanks to Onyi for these snaps this morning). I was so excited to wear the blazer that the tags were straight off and I was heading out of the door. I couldn’t help notice though that this felt considerably shorter than what it had looked like online but initially I dismissed this and put it down to the fact of me having an extra long torso. Anyway, it’s only after I returned home that I decided to have another look at it online again because something was really niggling me about it, and then I noticed that it is in fact a different blazer than I had ordered. The fabric and product code is the same but the blazer I’ve received is significantly shorter and has one pocket less on either side. Now I’m in a slight predicament because I had initially hoped for a longline blazer and that’s not what I’ve ended up with. In fact, I couldn’t find the blazer that I’ve received anywhere online. Obviously it’s not the end of the world but it’s a bit of a weird one. Anyway, I’ll leave the link here incase it does come back in stock, or incase you’re wondering what I’m nattering on about and fancy a nosy. So now the question is, do I return this one and explain the predicament in hope that it will come back in stock and I’ll somehow end up with the longline version eventually, or do I stick with this one – I’m just wondering where this jacket has actually come from and how I’ve ended up with this random variant of the one I ordered. Have you ever had anything like this happen when ordering online before?

Anyway, that’s enough rambling about this jacket for one post. I do love a good blazer but I didn’t think I could speak about one quite so much. Hopefully I’ll be able keep you updated on the blazer situation in a future post (if anyone is even interested), but for now that’s it from me. Ciao for now!

    Porto Portugal Review

    Another Trip To Portugal

At the end of August Damien and I decided to take a trip to Porto. I visited Portugal for the first time at the start of the year when I went to Lisbon (which you can read all about here) and it seems I’ve not been able to keep away since, as I then went for a second time for work to Vilamoura in May and then finally again for this trip last month. It’s fair to say that I’ve well and truly fallen for Portugal and Porto did not disappoint.

This has probably been my most relaxing trip of the year so far. I say relaxing, however we did managed to walk just over 94,000 steps within the 6 full days we were there. As you’ll be able to see from some of the pictures, Porto is incredibly hilly and we made it our mission most days to walk down the hill from the old part of town where we were staying, to walk along the river to then cross the bridge and do the same along the other side. We’d often do this twice per day as we did the same when we came out in the evenings too. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side of course…all jokes aside though, although both sides of the river have their fair share of fun, we just personally preferred the opposite side for restaurants as it was slightly less touristy. Plus although both sides of the Douro river have rather impressive views of Porto, we both preferred the view looking out from the opposite side to where we were staying as it was slightly prettier, so there you go.

    Where We Stayed

We stayed in Porto for 6 nights, which was a good amount of time but 5 nights would have probably been enough. Once again we opted for airBnb for our accommodation and stayed in the Baixa area which was close to lots of cool neighbourhood bars and restaurants frequented by the locals. I really liked the area we stayed in and would stay around that part again if I were to go back.

    Food

We had some really good food whilst in Porto and of course there was lots of good seafood available. If you are into fish then the sardines are a good dish to try whilst dining out by the river – but like I mentioned I’d recommend heading to the restaurants on the side opposite to the old town part if you do. And if unlike me you do eat meat then you may want to try the Francesinha, which seems to be one of Porto’s most popular dishes.

    Port

And finally, I of course cannot speak about Porto without speaking about Port – one of things which it is most famous for. I would definitely recommend taking a visit to one of the many Port cellars and of course doing a bit of Port tasting whilst you’re there too. We chose to visit Graham’s, which was one of the Port places situated furthest away from where we were staying (but as you probably guessed – we like to walk). I’d recommend the walk though because the views from the outside of the winery are quite beautiful (as you can see on the image below) and of course the Port is worth tasting too.

How long we stayed: 6 nights.
    Where we stayed: Baixa.

Must Try: Port Tasting. Sardines and the cod.
    Recommendations:
-Chill out at the open air bar, Base.
-Check out the bars/restaurants in the Baixa area – and go to the Champanheria da Baixa and try the champagne sangria, it’s soooo good. The atmosphere is also great on the weekend evenings.
-Go to Galeria de Paris for a super cheap yet tasty buffet lunch in the most random restaurant ever!
-Visit the Igreja de Santa Clara church.
-Go up Clérigos Tower at night for great nighttime views of the city.
-Find Arc of Truth (wine bar) for a cosy intimate setting, great wine and window views of Douro River.
-Go to Graham’s Winery for great views and a tour of the wine cellars – and port tasting (obviously).
Would I go again: Yes and would recommend a trip in August too.

  • The Need For Balance & A Social Time Out

The Need For Balance & A Social Time Out

Maybe There Is Such Thing As Too Much Fun

I well and truly feel like I’ve burnt the candle at both ends. You know that friend that will say yes to social plans 95% of the time, even the super last minute ones, well that’s me. The problem is, not being one to say no means I’m like this even when I have a thousand other things on my plate and eventually it often leads me to grinding to a complete and utter halt. I say this, but obviously work still needs to carry on, previously made social plans are still in the diary and meanwhile my mind is ready to switch off, I’m left feeling unmotivated and the most appealing option is to go into hibernation.

I think a big part of this comes down to not wanting to disappoint and trying to always be there for the people around me. When I say no to something or have to cancel plans I’m always left feeling so guilty, when in reality I know my friends and loved ones would understand, but I just can’t help feeling bad. There’s also the occasional fear of missing out and for the most part I just love having fun, so will rarely pass up the opportunity.

And that’s the thing, I do have a lot of fun. I can think of so many memories from this year alone that will set me off giggling just thinking about them. I’ve been able to spend some quality time and make great memories with some of my favourite people and I’ve had a lot of pretty cool adventures.

Whilst I sometimes do well with juggling it all, I need to remember that I occasionally need to stop in order to prevent me from eventually dropping everything. Saying no and easing up my social calendar is something I’ve never been great at and I absolutely love making plans, but it’s vital I get better at it in order to allow myself to have some rest and recuperation.

They talk about the work/life balance but I feel like I need ‘time out’ thrown in there too. I don’t mean stopping everything altogether, I just mean giving myself periods where I take a step back from social engagements and focus on work and me time, instead of trying to fit everything in all at once and eventually burning out altogether. This is just a reminder to myself that it’s okay to say no, it’s okay to not be available for everything and it’s okay to have those days that you might not have other plans but that you keep free anyway, even just to have a day for yourself.

  • Flared Denim

    Flared Denim

    Something New

A week away from denim and I have to say that I actually missed wearing my new jeans (as sad as that sounds). If you didn’t already know I was on holiday in Porto, for just short of a week where I allowed myself to switch off from emails and all work related stuff – hence the lack of posting. Needless to say it was sheer bliss and a photo heavy Porto post will soon follow but for my first post back in over a week, I wanted to talk about my new jeans.

and Other Stories Cropped Flared Denim Jeans

Now I’ve talked about how I cut down on wearing denim as a little bit of a self-styling challenge not too long ago and after a break away from wearing jeans almost everyday, my love for denim was refreshed and I felt keen to try out some new styles. Since the purchase of my last pair of jeans back in May, my obsession with jeans seems to be back in full force. Not only am I loving wearing denim again at every opportunity, I’ve also got brave enough to try out some different styles and fits too.

Here is where I introduce my latest denim addition, purchased not too long before I went away, which are these cropped flared jeans. Never did I think I’d be adding flared jeans into my wardrobe but on a recent trip into & Other Stories, whilst waiting for my friend to try on jeans, just on a whim, I decided to try on a pair too.

Now I mentioned in my previous denim post how I hate jean shopping and usually I have to try on about a thousand pairs before I can find a perfect fit and one that suits my body shape. So once again I was surprised to find a fit that I actually love and in a completely different style too. So although I’m not usually one for impulse purchases, I made my second impulse jean purchase in the space of 4 months and I have to say I’m very pleased with that decision.

I wore these jeans near enough everyday since buying them, prior to heading on holiday and this was one of those occasions. Now I’m back I can’t wait to get wearing them again. I just love the versatility of jeans and that is one of the main reasons I missed wearing them so much.

These flared jeans are surprisingly flattering and I’ve been loving styling them up in lots of different ways. On this occasions I was meeting Onyi in town to spend the afternoon working in a coffeeshop. These are some of the comfiest jeans I’ve ever owned and they worked perfectly thrown on with my new vans, a simple tee and my biker jacket for a super casual day look.

These jeans are also true to size and I’m glad to say that they do odd number sizes, as usually I have to jump between a 26 or 28 in jeans, but on this occasion I was able to get my exact fit, which is a 27 and the fit is perfect. The denim is thick but with a good stretch and I’m super impressed with the shape and quality. I’ll definitely be checking out & Other Stories for my next pair of denim jeans, that’s for sure.

  • 5 Things…And A Transitional Trench Coat

    5 Things…And A Transitional Trench Coat

    A Ramble

Today’s post is going to be a rambling one, as whilst I’d had every intention of making this post a deep and meaningful one, it’s late, I have a 5:30am call time tomorrow (yes you read that right, 5:30AM!) and I have about a zillion other things on my mind, which unfortunately don’t provide much in terms of deep and meaningful topics of conversations. I can however treat you to the delights of my current brain activity with a spew of whatever pops into my head. So welcome to the second instalment of 5 (very random) things, with a new outfit post thrown in to boot.

    1. The thing in the forefront of my mind is tomorrows shoot. Two shoots in fact! I have two bookings in one day, both coincidentally for sportswear/fitness clients and one after another. Apparently the first job will involve running, so I’m just hoping I won’t end up a big sweaty mess by the afternoon. Either way I’ll require a few coffees to help me through the day I’m sure because it’s going to be a long one.

    2. The second thing on my mind is my holiday on Friday. I almost said trip but this one I am actually allowing myself to call a holiday. It’s going to be my 8th (I think) trip abroad this year and the 3rd trip Damien and I have had away together this year too. I’m really hoping to relax on this trip and switch off a bit. I feel like I haven’t done it in so long and I’m really ready to just chill the heck out. Out of office will be going on and I won’t be taking any phone calls!

    3. Okay notice how I didn’t say ‘switch off completely’ there. The last time I switched off completely was when Damien and I went to Kos last October and I put my phone on airplane mode for a week – it was pure bliss! This time however, with it being a really busy time for work and with stuff constantly coming in, I already know I’ll find myself having to respond to at least one email. But I’m putting a restriction to it, along with how frequent I even allow myself to check my emails in the first place, because this is going to be a hol-i-dayyy after all.

    4. Topic changer, but the green guitar I mentioned in my last 5 Things post, is now settled into our living room, and yes, I have been picking it up to practice on too. Now I’m no rockstar just yet but I have learnt two cords. Yes, two whole cords. As unimpressive as that may sound, it’s actually a lot further than I ever got the first time around, back when I had my uni guitar (you know the one that broke). I’m making a concious effort to pick it up and practice a bit everyday. I’ve put it out there now so this is pressure on me to have made some real progress in a year from now.

    5. Back to the topic of holiday I actually can’t wait to get away and enjoy some sunshine because the weather here over the past couple of weeks hasn’t been the best. I can hardly call it summer weather and I’ve already starting pulling out those transitional pieces, like this satin trench coat I’m wearing in the pics. I’m not altogether thrilled that our UK Summer seems to be getting cut abruptly short but at the same time I must admit that a part of me is excited for Autumn clothes and pulling a few of my old jumpers back out (ughr can’t believe I actually just said that).

Okay that’s it. I’m done. This has been a most rambling, random and inconsequential blog post (I’m tired can you tell) and if you made it to the end, then hurrah and if not then hopefully you enjoyed the pictures and got something out of this outfit post. Ciao for now!

  • The Jacket I Needed In My Wardrobe

The Jacket I Needed In My Wardrobe

Oh hey there Friday! Another week has flown by and I’m also surprised at how fast summer is going too! I had been holding onto summer with every ounce of my being but as soon as it’s grey skies and rain, all I can think about is winter coats, layering and where to start looking for some new boots. Although I’m not ready for all of that quite yet, I must admit I am slowly entering the transition period with my wardrobe and I’ve already made my first Autumn/Winter(ish) purchase, with this faux leather biker jacket.

Now I wouldn’t class a biker jacket as seasonal, it’s definitely an all rounder as far as I’m concerned but it’s certainly a piece I knew I wanted in my wardrobe by Autumn. I’d been on the look out for a replacement ever since I got rid of my last biker jacket whilst having a Spring clean of my wardrobe. I’d worn that jacket to death and although I loved the style, after years of wear it was time to let it go and look for a replacement. I finally found one that fit (I often have long arm problems) and that I liked the style of whilst in Topshop the other day. It’s faux leather but that didn’t put me off because my last biker jacket was too and I wore that so, so much yet it still lasted for ages. I also like the fact that this one has a faux shearling detachable collar. You know I love my versatile pieces and I like how it gives it a completely different look, which will be great for when we move into Autumn.

I wore this outfit combination last night as L’Oréal and I headed to the Porter + Cole launch party. I featured that spot in a recent blog post and it’s fast become a favourite spot, of both of ours. There aren’t many places where you can go for a coffee and want to stay all day and then for a wine in the evening and want to stay all night. This is certainly one of those spots and if you live in Manchester I definitely suggest you go and check it out.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’m keeping short and sweet today as I’m about to head out. Have a fabulous weekend!

    Finding A New Fit

When I was in Hamburg back in June (it’s crazy that it now feels like forever ago) I bought a pair of jeans whilst in browsing in Weekday. Now if you’re a regular to my blog or Youtube channel, you’ll know that at the start of the summer, I made a concious effort to move away from wearing jeans quite so much. I started incorporating more trousers into my wardrobe to create more styling alternatives.

Now don’t get me wrong I’ve totally loved getting more experimental and stepping out of my usual style routine by playing around with trousers, but, I must admit that there are times when you just can’t beat a good of pair of denim jeans.

I’d relied on my favourite Asos Farleigh slim fit mom jeans for such a long time and I finally decided it was time to try something different. I have to say right now, that I absolutely loathe jeans shopping – nothing ever seems to fit right and it makes me hate everything. So when I tried on these Ami style jeans and immediately loved the fit, it was a no brainer to me that I make the purchase.

Since then I have been getting so much wear out of these jeans that dare I say it, they seem to have even knocked my favourite Farleigh jeans off of top spot! The mid rise waist on the Ami jeans make a nice change to the super high waisted styles that I usually go for and I love the cropped straight leg on these too.

Just as I thought I’d discovered a whole new style of jeans that work for me, I realised that I actually have these exact same jeans in oatmeal that I’d bought from Weekday last year. Now it’s not that I have a great abundance of denim and don’t know where I’m up to, but I’d presumed that they were a different fit because they look completely different in the oatmeal shade (or at least they did to me). It was only out of curiosity the other day that I decided to check the fit by reading the label on my oatmeal coloured ones and discovered that they are the Ami style too. It seems to have only helped rekindle my love for my oatmeal ones and so now I have two pairs of jeans in my new (not really new) favourite style.

Anyway that’s enough rambling about one (actually two) pair of jeans for one post. I’m sure you’ll be seeing lots more of these on my blog, if you haven’t seen them already plastered all over my Instagram, as they have fast become a day to day favourite. I’ll let the blog pics do the rest of the talking and you can see two recent ways I’ve worn my new Weekday Ami jeans, whilst out and about.

    The Accidental Two Piece

    A Perfect Combination

I love it when I find different pieces in my wardrobe that work perfectly together. On first appearance you may mistake this outfit combination for a two piece but the trousers and blazer are actually from two different brands entirely, with the trousers being from Topshop and the sleeveless blazer being from Lavish Alice. It hadn’t initially occurred to me that these two pieces would work together but before heading out one recent sunny Saturday, I decided to throw on my new sleeveless blazer with my Topshop trousers and Brandy Melville knitted crop top and it instantly seemed to work.

If prior to this you would have asked me my thoughts on the idea of a beige ensemble like this, I don’t think I would have been quite as enthusiastic, as let’s face it, it sounds a little bit drab doesn’t it, but it goes to show that sometimes you just have to try things on before making a final decision.

Before I forget I should mention the shoes, which are another new(ish) addition. I bought these a few weeks ago whilst in London and they were just the summer shoes I’d been looking for. They are a great day to day sandal/shoe without being too summery – which pretty much makes them perfect for the UK with our ever changing weather.

This combination made the perfect outfit for an afternoon spent with Damien and some friends, drinking cocktails and enjoying the sun. I’m a big fan of sleeveless blazers and I find it makes a great light layer for warmer days, which can (like on this occasion) tie an outfit together perfectly.
